About Knee Physiotherapy
What Is Knee Physiotherapy?
Knee physiotherapy is a hands-on, exercise-based approach to diagnosing why your knee hurts and rebuilding how it handles load. We look past the sore spot to your hip control, thigh and calf strength, landing mechanics and training load, because the knee is often reacting to what happens above and below it.
Your plan combines manual therapy, progressive strength-based rehab and clear advice, to help you manage your pain and reduce the chance of it coming back.
Who Is It For?
- Runners with pain around or behind the kneecap
- Footballers, netballers and court athletes with twisting or landing injuries
- Gym-goers with pain on squats, lunges or leg press
- People with an ACL or meniscus injury, before or after surgery
- Anyone with knee osteoarthritis who wants to keep moving
- People whose knee hurts on stairs, getting up from a chair or walking
- Active adults returning to sport after a knee injury
- Anyone whose knee pain keeps coming back

Not sure what is causing your knee pain?
Book an assessmentWhen to See a Physio
Book an assessment if your knee pain limits training or daily activity, keeps returning, follows an injury, or has not settled after a short period of relative rest. Earlier assessment often means a simpler plan.
- Pain on stairs, squatting or kneeling
- Swelling, stiffness or catching
- The knee feels unstable or gives way
- Pain that has not settled in a couple of weeks
Common Causes
Knee pain can come from a sudden injury or build slowly. Common causes include kneecap pain, meniscus irritation, ligament sprains, tendon overload, osteoarthritis, jumps in training load, and weak or poorly controlled hips and thighs.

FAQs
Can knee pain go away on its own?
Some mild knee pain settles with a short period of relative rest and sensible load. If it keeps returning, limits training or follows an injury, an assessment helps find out why.
Will I need surgery for my knee pain?
Many cases of knee pain are managed without surgery. Some injuries, such as certain ligament or meniscus tears, may need a surgical opinion. We will tell you if we think you need further review.
How long does knee rehab usually take?
It depends on the cause, how long it has been there and your goals. Your physio will give you an estimate after your first assessment and update it as you progress.
Is exercise safe when my knee hurts?
Often the right kind of exercise is part of recovery. We choose the type, load and range your knee tolerates now, then progress it.
Is knee pain always caused by the knee itself?
No. Hip control, thigh and calf strength, foot mechanics and training load can all affect the knee, so we assess the whole leg.
